A strong star cast, good music, and a raunchy item number have been the quintessential requisites of a successful Bollywood film for quite some time now. However, of late, there has been a paradigm shift in what works and what doesn’t. While the Khans, who otherwise rule the industry, have failed to bring any cheer to the box office, small budgeted movies have proved to be the most popular underdogs of the year. Badhaai Ho leads the list for 2018.

What worked so well for the film that revolved around an elderly couple? Was it Ayushmann Khurana’s proven track record of making small films big or was it the out-of-the-box content? According to analysts, it is a healthy mixture of both, dominated by the content.

According to film trade analyst Atul Mohan, “The film was made with a budget under Rs30 crore and has earned seven times its investment. The math is easy here. It is only freshness and novelty in content that has the potential to make money at the box office. Bored with stereotypes, moviegoers prefer a change of taste every now and then. While mainstream commercial films have not really stopped dominating Bollywood, small- budgeted, out-of-the-box films have definitely started taking a big bite of the success pie when it comes to box office numbers.”

To Khurana’s credit, his last release before Badhaai Ho – Andhadhun – also fared well at the box office. “When an actor delivers a good film, there is always a positive impact on his next release as people look forward to more good performances from him. This is not the only factor for Badhaai Ho’s success, but it is definitely one of them,” Mohan said.

Coming to the numbers, the late October release made Rs 7.35 crore on its opening day. When word of mouth spread, it brought more people to theatres and hence, more money to the box office. In its first week, the film clocked close to Rs 65.33 crore followed by Rs 27.5 crore in the next week and Rs 15.22 crore, Rs 10.43 crore and Rs 7.63 in the third, fourth and fifth week respectively. Running strong in its sixth week too, the film made Rs 3.95 crore, close to Rs 50 lakhs more than what Baahubali 2 made in its sixth week. The film is expected to touch Rs 140 crore to Rs 142 crore in its lifetime run.

Moreover, the film has emerged a huge hit in the overseas market too. The film has crossed  $3 million in the USA and Canada, and cruised past A$ 700,000 in Australia. “In the overseas market the film has made more money than many big banner movies that released around the same time, such as Thugs of Hindostan,” Mohan added.
