U.S. ambassador visits detained American in Russia: State Department

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman met with Paul Whelan, an American detained in Moscow since Friday on allegations of spying, a U.S. State Department spokesman said on Wednesday.

“Ambassador Huntsman expressed his support for Mr. Whelan and offered the embassy’s assistance,” the spokesman said in a statement. Whelan’s family has rejected Russia’s allegations.
