BMW Group India posts decade low volumes in 2020, registers 32 percent decline in sales

MUMBAI: Munich based luxury car maker BMW Group India posted a record 32% drop in sales in 2020 to 6604 cars as falling economic growth severely impacted the demand for high end cars in the market. A 50 days nationwide lockdown, pulled down the German luxury car makers volumes to its lowest in the last one decade in India.

This was a second consecutive year of double digit decline in sales for BMW Group in India. The company had sold 11105 cars and 9641 cars and utility vehicles in the year 2018 and 2019 respectively.

BMW Group India delivered 6,604 units of BMW and MINI cars in 2020. BMW India registered sales of 6,092 units and MINI India of 512 units. BMW Motorrad sold 2,563 motorcycles, the company said in a statement.

Reviewing the performance of 2020, Vikram Pawah, President, BMW Group India said, the company has demonstrated resilience and determination in a tough environment full of new challenges.

“With improving macroeconomic indicators and consumer confidence, BMW Group India picked up momentum with remarkable efficiency and vigour. We registered strong results at the end of a very difficult year and propelled our segment share significantly in the Indian luxury car market. We are looking towards 2021 with renewed confidence and optimism,” added hopeful Pawah.

BMW India saw a significant contribution of over 50% coming from the locally produced Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) range including the BMW X1, the BMW X3 and the BMW X5. The newly launched BMW X7 experienced strong demand across regions. The BMW 3 Series and the BMW 5 Series continued their traditional role as strong contributors in the sedan segment.

MINI India successfully increased its market share in the premium car segment despite the difficult industry scenario. The brand posted strong performance and growth in the last quarter of the year. The locally produced MINI Countryman commanded a share of over 40% in sales. The MINI hatch and the popular MINI Convertible contributed over 23% each to the sales.
